Summer Volunteers 2012 vacancies
国际竹藤组织2012暑假志愿者招聘


All these positions last for six weeks from mid July to late August 2012. One position is seeking to recruit a candidate for a 1 July start. Most positions are suitable for postgraduate students and recent graduates in Beijing, and to anyone else interested in spending a few weeks gaining experience at INBAR. INBAR provides a small daily volunteers allowance for these positions, and free lunch at INBAR. No other costs are covered.

Please indicate clearly which positions you are applying for, and include a letter of application in English which should include why you are interested in the position and why you feel you are suitable for it. Selection and interviews will be conducted in early July in Beijing.  Applications should be received by 29th June 2012. 1.        Training course assistants – 2 positions

INBAR has been running development projects funded by the EU and by Citi to help develop the bamboo sector in Sichuan provinces since 2009. We need to better prepare the training programmes and material in a nice-looking and more readable way to the audience, and process training evaluation data and some baseline data. We need some assistants to input their energy to help improve the training design, documents and reports, and enter the training evaluation and baseline data into the computer

Since the trainees are all Chinese-speaking persons and now all materials and reports are in Chinese. To serve the two English-speaking donors, we need to compile and translate concise materials and reports for donors.

Duties


        Help the EU project and Citi projects in Sichuan to prepare and improve the training materials and reports.
        Compile and translate relevant training materials, manuals and reports into English.
        Assist the project team to organize and implement training course in Beijing/Sichuan.
        Prepare and design the training manuals in a better looking styles.
        Enter the training evaluation and some baseline data into the computer.


Qualifications and experience


        Excellent Chinese and English languages, preferably have overseas study or working experience at least one year.
        Relevant knowledge and background on training programmes.
        Relevant background in agriculture and forestry, or biology, economics and/or English language.
        Good computer skills.


The position may include the opportunity to travel within China, subject to need and to budget availability.

The successful applicants will work in the Environmental Sustainability Programme under the supervision of Yang Hanmei, Li Yanxia and Liu Bo.


2.        Training Workshop Assistant

The Chinese Ministry of Commerce sponsors many China-aided seminars for developing countries every year. INBAR co-organizes those on bamboo and rattan. In the seminars, senior government officials from developing countries learn and exchange advanced experience in bamboo and rattan industry. We are now seeking a volunteer to assist with organizing and running a seminar in July as well as conducting a training-related survey on past seminars.


Duties

        To assist the supervisor with daily correspondences, faxes, mails and data collection & preliminary analysis for the training-related survey on past seminars and study tours;
        To translate documents between English and Chinese;
        To provide logistic support for preparing the Seminar in July, i.e. participant reception and informal interpretation;
        Term of period: 1 July – 30 August 2012


Qualifications and experience

        Bachelor degree or above, post-graduate student preferred; Major in English, International Politics, International Journalism, etc.
        Excellent English writing, speaking and listening skills. Band-8 preferred;
        Experienced on translation between English and Chinese preferred;
        Experienced in organizing events and meetings;
        Detail-oriented, responsible, efficient and hardworking;
        Good computer skills, Word, Excel, Outlook included;


The successful applicant will work in the Membership Unit under the supervision of Pi Meiling.


3.        Assistant on preparing a bamboo and climate change brochure for youth and the general public

Climate Change is a mystery and a complicated scientific issues to many general public, esp. to the youth who in the primary, middle schools and universities. However, to get them understanding and involvement to the campaign of the climate mitigation and adaptation is essential to lay down a foundation to fight the climate change for the future.

The role of bamboo for CC mitigation and climate change, which we have been working and largely promoted in last a few years by INBAR and its partners, are also confused and questioned by many general public and scientists with its special features in carbon sequestration which is in different patterns in growth, management and utilization.

A concise, interestingly readable and understandable brochure to analyze and explain research outputs in an interesting way on bamboo for climate change could help the audience to understand and consequently possibly to contribute to the cause.

Main duties


        Read and analyze the updated research publications and results on bamboo and climate change.
        Prepare a 10-page concise, interestingly readable and understandable brochure to analyze and explain research outputs in an interesting way on bamboo for climate change for the youth and general audience to understand and consequently possibly to contribute to the cause.


Qualifications and experience

        Having basic knowledge about global warming and climate
        Fluent in English and Chinese
        Both English and Chinese reading and writing skills
        Knowledge on plants and biology will be asset;


The successful applicant will work in the Environmental Sustainability Programme under Dr Lou Yiping and/or his colleagues.


4.        Livelihoods & Economic Development Research assistant

The Livelihood and Economic Development Programme (LED) aims to create sustainable rural livelihoods and enterprises by utilizing locally available bamboo and rattan resources. LED is seeking to develop a single documented list of sources and references for the most frequently used data for its work. Additionally, a lot of written material has been produced without a proper research of background/existing work on the subject. And the position will include conducting preliminary research on already-created content.


Duties
        Document researched material of LED data: Searching, organizing and creating easily usable lists of sources and references
        Secondary research: Conduct generic research from secondary sources on specific products, technologies, and methodologies
        Writing: Annotating, summarizing and making briefs on researched materials for quick assessment of data annotate


Qualifications and experience
        Previous research experience; good knowledge of secondary research methods and databases
        Good understanding of development and related issues; particularly social research methods and socio-economic aspects of development
        Some knowledge of information management systems; ability to organize output well; good reporting skills
        Capable of independent work and independent thought to improve quality of output
        Ability to work in a team is very important; prioritizing tasks, processing input from multiple sources
        Very good English skills

The successful applicant will work in the Livelihood and Economic Development Programme, under the supervision of Jin Wei and Malavika Bevalangala.


5.        Computer assistant

INBAR Summer Volunteers Scheme has been running successfully for 8 years. With the grown number of volunteers join the scheme, a computer person is needed to setup and maintain a working environment for summer volunteers and facilitate them on their computer work. Meanwhile, INBAR needs to review and update its contact database, photo database, and other databases.


Duties
•        Maintain computer environment for 2012 Summer volunteers
•        Data consolidate and database update for INBAR contact database, photo database, etc.
•        Helping INBAR project staff on updating project web pages in INBAR website  


Qualifications and experience
•        Familiar with computer machine with Windows Operation System
•        Familiar with MS Office, Adobe products
•        Basic networking knowledge
•        Basic web page editing skill
•        Good English


The successful applicant will work in the Networking and Partnership Unit, under the supervision of Liu Qian, INBAR systems specialist.


6.        INBAR library and information systems assistant

INBAR’s library and its online information systems are being updated! INBAR has had a library of bamboo and rattan, and other, publications since its inception, but it is almost never used, and the holdings have not been updated for many years. INBAR is now revitalizing the library, and needs a dedicated and skilled assistant to help us do so. INBARs online information systems are also being updated.


Duties
        Recommend and develop an improved system for managing library the holdings.
        Recommend and develop a system for making holdings available to users outside INBAR
        Develop an electronic library.
        Provide assistance with developing content for online information services.
        Help update the INBAR components of FAO’s TECA technologies database.


Qualifications and experience
        Demonstrable knowledge and/or experience of library management.
        Excellent English.
        Experience of managing/developing  online information systems.
        Knowledge, experience and skills of library software and cataloguing systems, and of e-libraries would be an advantage.

The successful applicant will work in the Networking and Partnership Unit, under the supervision of Mr. Andrew Benton.
